Achieving zero waste sounds ambitious but in Yolo county, a pilot program is underway to reduce the footprint from single-use meal packages.

On Aug. 1, the "Waste Zero Davis – Senior Meals and Packaging" program started its five-month long collaboration between Meals on Wheels Yolo County and Recology Davis.

More than 8,000 seniors that are food insecure are assisted each year in Yolo County.

Justina Vega, the General Manager at Recology Davis, said it's a significant sized community who may have had road blocks to recycle.

Joy Cohan with Meals on Wheels said they are looking into producing more environment-friendly food packaging but in the meantime the partnership with Recology Davis should be beneficial.
